Hoppin' John for the New Year

Cafe Drake HRV always adheres to the Southern U.S. custom of Hoppin' John stew, braised collard greens and iron skillet cornbread as our traditional New Year's meal. The rice and black eye peas found in the stew are said to bring good luck and health in the days ahead while the greens symbolize prosperity.

This year we craved the crunch and freshness of a raw veggie as well, hence our less traditional Cabbage and Black Mustard Seed slaw as seen above. Grab our Hoppin' John recipe from the 2007 Cafe Drake HRV archives RIGHT HERE. It's good anytime of year!
