Miniature Golf, Art, Chiliquiles, Dinner and a Movie
Who says we have to sit at home with an aching jaw and watch the world pass by. Certainly not Cafe Drake, or our dear friend Jen Lazzaro, so adept at getting us both out of the house and also enjoying proper meals at home (within limits). We began in an industrial stretch of Sunset Park, playing miniature golf (a full 18-hole course, each "green" designed by a local artist, including Cafe Drake pals Meridith Pingree and Kai Vierstra: exhibit entitled Playing Through). On to banana shakes and chiliquiles con salsa verde at the appropriately named Eclipse Restaurant, 4314 Fourth Ave, Brooklyn, NY (no lights on -or a/c). All in all a very decent lunch as the chiliquiles were tender to the jaw and smothered in crema, shaved anejo queso, thinly sliced tomatoes and onions and ultra-soft slices of avocado. Also excellent was the homemade habanero salsa, spicier than most and bursting with fresh flavors. Next Jen worked her kitchen magic and wiggled her nose and popped over with a luscious Green Pea Soup, sweetened by butter and shallots and fresh mint. Dinner was in front of Mahogany (the Diana Ross 70s kitsch classic) and also included Indian-flavored simmered meatballs and soft pasta, pureed spicy spinach and fresh watermelon.
