Ukrainian End of Summer Supper with The Sellers
Cafe Drake was recently treated to a seasonal finale of summer fare, this time courtesy of Natalie Sellers who recreated in her Brooklyn kitchen warm weather meals of yore, prepared by Ukrainian grandparents at the shore. We began with a garlicky tomato salad accompanied by a firm goat cheese (reminiscent of a stronger flavored Gouda), soft herbed cheese from the farmer's market and toasted crostini. The main course consisted of beef patties fried with onions and creamy, crunchy potatoes and cucumbers dressed with a light vinegary cream sauce and fresh dill. Equally scrumptious was warm homemade apple crumble crowned with organic vanilla ice cream. Perhaps tastiest of all was young Julian, who after a bottle of baby food and sampling of the appetizers taught Cafe Drake a new, particularly frenzied dance step. Guess it's what the kids today are doing.
